A Different Seasonal Measure
Southern California is shaped less by four separate seasons than by a continuing rhythm of wetness and dryness, growth and rest, heat and relief, exposure and shelter.
Seasonal change is often first noticed through light.
The difference may be subtle. Morning sun reaches farther beneath a tree. A wall remains shaded longer. Afternoon light moves across a planting from a lower angle. A space that felt exposed during summer becomes gentler, while another loses the warmth that supported it earlier in the year.
Understanding that rhythm begins with recognizing that the landscape may not follow the date.
